Photograph Description

Taken by Duffy for Vogue in July 1961 at Ponte Vecchio in Florence. The feature was published in September of the same year.

Celia Hammond is photographed under the end of the Vasari Corridor. This structure runs along the Ponte Vecchio and along the riverbank connecting the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti.

Hammond began modeling in 1960, quickly becoming favored by photographers such as Terence Donovan and Norman Parkinson. After becoming involved with Lady Dowding of Beauty Without Cruelty, Hammond campaigned against the modeling of fur. She also informed and convinced many of the top models of the time to do the same. Her activism progressed into welfare works involving the rescuing and rehoming of stray animals. Today the Celia Hammond Animal Trust Charity is active in London and the South-East.
